A new highly contemporary extension to the Grade I listed Stratford House, an important landmark building at the end of Stratford Place, once the largest private home in London.
Now home to the Oriental Club, the building operates as a private members’ club with restaurant, entertainment, meeting and library spaces alongside members’ bedrooms and forms a key part of the vibrant and historic Westminster gentleman’s club tradition.
Working closely with the Club, Westminster and English Heritage, we coordinated an extensive historic research analysis and sought consent to demolish an existing disused stable building within an inner courtyard / light-well. This was replaced with a new and contemporary six-storey extension, linked directly to the Grade I rear of the existing building.
The glazed faience brickwork to the external wall was repaired and is now fully exposed within the new internal link corridor. A structural glass threshold at each floor clearly expresses the connection between the old and new building elements.
The planning consent formed an important, new planning precedent in Westminster, with regards to commercial expansion.
