Crawley Borough Council is replacing their 1950’s council office with 182 new homes and a nine-storey office building. We’ve been working as client advisers to the council since 2016 and our role was extended to workplace consultants on the council’s own civic use element within the wider commercial development.
The council’s new space, designed by our sister company Cartwright Pickard, will provide over 4,000 sqm customer service and civic office, including a new flexible civic chamber. Doubling up of functions will enable the public and democratic spaces to be used flexibly and efficiently throughout the day.
The civic double-height foyer, with its sculptural stair and public facilities, can be used both by the ground floor customer services centre and the first floor conferencing functions. We used movable walls to subdivide the council chamber into three committee rooms allowing for flexible use (such as lecture halls, training rooms or awards ceremony).
We worked closely with the Council’s departments to help define and formulate their needs. We facilitated internal communications to help the staff understand the new building and the workplace strategy. The final outcome produces a modern and flexible workspace encouraging integration and staff wellbeing.View case study
